The Boat House, thought to have been built for a visit by Queen Victoria to Carton House in County KIldare, Ireland, an imposing Palladian pile from the mid 18th century, built by Richard Cassels as the ancestral seat of the Fitzgeralds, Earls of Kildare and Dukes of Leinster. The surrounding lands originally covered some 70, 000 acres, with the house surrounded by formal gardens until the late 18th century, when all was swept away to create a natural environment. Today the remaining demesne is considered to be one of the finest examples of Georgian Parkland in Ireland. The boat house came into being after the Fitzgerald's were informed that the Queen had a dream that she was rowing on the lake at Carton House, so, ever attentive hosts, they commissioned a special boat for her visit, and built the pretty Boat House to keep it in.
