TIST trade tree planting against CO2 emissions For detailed information please visit their website Interview with Beatrice Kaburo age 61 and a farmer in the Mount Kenya Region Beatrice has been a part of TIST for one year and has planted 300 trees She is planning another 600 trees in half yearly cycles over the next year I am very happy to be receiving extra money but as well it means that my grandchildren will have timber for building selling and for making donkey carts With more trees you can get more rainfall and cleaner air they going to prevent soil erosion and also good for timber charcoal and firewood It s great because TIST pay me to grow trees and if I decide I need it I will plant two in its place I really like the money but also find it very useful sharing information with my neighbours TIST has improved cooperation between us At the beginning we were suspicious of the gadgets we thought people were coming to sell our land but later learned that it was a good way of documenting the tree growth for the sponsors Each group consists of farmers and a quantifier The quantifier s role besides recruitment is to keep an accurate record of the growth and location of the trees This is done using a handheld computer and more recently a GSM enabled PDA linked via Bluetooth to a GPS receiver A user friendly interface allows the quantifier to take accurate records and so protecting against error The detailed records are then sent via the GSM network to a database which is analysed by the sponsors and offset against greenhouse emissions The sponsors include US Aid an American agency for international development which is the biggest investor Cleaner Air also a major investor Dow Chemical and Ontario Power Generation OPG
