Annapolis, Md. (Oct. 9, 2003) -- The U.S. Navy Barracks Craft Auxiliary Personnel Lighter Sixty One (APL-61) is moored alongside the U.S. Naval Academy's Dewey Seawall. The barge is 90 feet wide, 360 feet long and is five stories in height. It will serve as temporary classrooms for Midshipmen displaced by Hurricane Isabel and is expected to be used for the remainder of the semester. The barge has been used in the past for crews of ships during yard periods and is totally dependent on shore utilities. It has been configured for computer networks and Internet service as well as many of the necessary services such as barbers, medical and dental services, postal service and religious ministries.
