Bilikiki. Trip organised by Chris Newbert of RS Tours. Shot on 11:00 30 March 2002; sunny day, big swell with moderate current. On dives when the resident large schools of barracudas, jacks or sharks are not performing, everything else on this reef is macro-territory, except for a few landmarks such as this 2m high coral pedestal capped with a helmet of brain coral. Over the years of diving here, the column has slowly eroded becoming thinner and forming cracks and necks. Many crinoids hang on to it as a convenient outcrop from the reef, often directly in strong currents, and so good places from them to feed on the stream of plankton rich water.
