Rapid assessment on orangutan's habitat and biodiversity of Batang Toru watershed and rainforest, North Sumatra, Indonesia Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra, Indonesia. December 2005. A team of conservation workers hold a field survey in rainforest area located in and around Sitahuis district, Central Tapanuli regency, North Sumatra province, Indonesia. The team---consists of a primatologist, GIS expert, botanist, biologist and rangers---walks in gridlines for several days through the forest in an effort of mapping and data collecting, which is a part of a series of field surveys during the rapid assesment program initiated by Conservation International. The overall goal is to measure the potential of Batang Toru watershed and rainforest that is condidered to be proposed as a nature protection area for an endangered orangutan species. The forest is a part of Batang Toru (River Toru) ecosystem which lies on three regencies in Tapanuli, North Sumatra province of Indonesia. The Batang Toru ecosystem is believed as the last habitat for an orangutan subspecies, or entirely a new species, that is both morphology and behaviourally different compared with Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii). Communities living in villages surrounding the Batang Toru rainforest have reported the sights of orangutans, which are considered by primatologists as the part of the remaining Sumatran orangutan population living in fragmented forest south of Lake Toba. The team stays on a farmer's hut in the forest during the field survey.
