Batang Toru: Bridging the Nature Conservation and Community's Interest Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra, Indonesia. December 2005. A team of conservation workers hold a field survey in rainforest area located in and around Sitahuis district, Central Tapanuli regency, North Sumatra province, Indonesia. The forest is a part of Batang Toru (River Toru) ecosystem which lies on three regencies in Tapanuli, North Sumatra province of Indonesia. The Batang Toru ecosystem is believed as the last habitat for an orangutan subspecies, or entirely a new species, that is both morphology and behaviourally different compared with Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii). Communities living in and around the rainforest rely partly on food hunting and food gathering besides agriculture. Conservationists have been addressing this issue by placing community empowerment as an integral part of any nature conservation effort, providing education and assistance for communities in finding an alternative source of income which is more sustainable and eco-friendly. Conservation International (CI) had mentioned in a released document that the "sustainable alternatives for local communities" are needed. The document was also evaluating that "the agroforests of Batang Toru and surrounding area can provide sustainable livelihood options with opportunities to increase farmers' income without negative environmental impacts and minimize community pressure to the forest."
