Built 1.5 km from Apollonia, Artemonas is the largest village in Sifnos and according to history owes its name to the goddess Artemis, who was worshiped by the inhabitants of the island.Filled with labyrinthine, dazzlingly white alleys and traditionally beautiful neoclassical houses of Cycladic architecture, it will offer you countless images of amazing landscapes. These images will certainly include the views of the windmills area, which the locals call Bella Vista (i.e. beautiful view), and from where you will enjoy the settlement of Kastro from above, the waters of the Aegean Sea and other islands of the Cyclades. Your walk at the village will bring you in front of the house of Ioannis Gryparis (on the street with the same name), the great Greek philologist, and his statue at the elementary school yard, but also it will take you to important churches like Panagia of Ammos and Panagia of Balis.Every summer in Artemonas there is the Exhibition of Folklore Items “Giannis Atsonios”, under the title “Our houses in the old days”, while the Cycladic Gastronomy Festival “Nikolaos Tselementes” takes place at the central square every September, as Sifnos is the homeland of the great cooking master. There are plenty of options in accommodation and food as well as pottery workshops at the village.
