One of at least 39 mass graves of 5000 to 7000 civilians, mostly Polish intellectuals (national activists, teachers, priests) from Kociewie, Kaszuby and Pomerania, local Jewish inhabitants of Starogard Gdanski and patients of mental hospital in Kocborowo, exterminated in Las Szpegawski (Szpegawsk Forest) near to Starogard Gdanski by Nazi German Volksdeutscher Selbstschutz, from September 1939 to January 1940, during the beginning of Nazi German occupation of Poland. In mass murders in Piasnica Wielka, Mniszek near Swiecie and many others, 30.000 to 40.000 Poles in Pomerania were murdered as a part of Intelligenzaktion Pommern (part of Intelligenzaktion in Poland), and Operation Tannenberg, secret planned extermination of 100.000 members of Polish intelligentsia with the use of a proscription list (Sonderfahndungsbuch Polen), compiled by Gestapo before 1939.
