Originally called 'armoured cars, 'land ships or 'land battleships' and driven by Royal Navy crews, this photograph shows a tank on the battlefield. In the background can be seen infantry soldiers and horses. It is interesting to consider what the net-type rigging on top of this tank was designed for. The painting on the side of the tank probably indicates that the net would be for camouflaging purposes. It is believed that this photograph was taken by John Warwick Brooke. Given the photographs caption references to 15 September and the massed troops and horses in the background, it is highly likely that this British tank took part in the third phase of the great Somme offensive. This was the first time that tanks had been deployed on a battlefield. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE.
