Photograph by David Coleman. The Neptune statue at Virginia Beach is a colossal bronze sculpture that has become an iconic symbol of the city since its installation in 2005. Located at 31st Street and Atlantic Avenue, at the entrance to Neptune Park on the oceanfront boardwalk, this impressive work of art stands as a testament to Virginia Beach's deep connection to the sea. Created by Richmond-based sculptor Paul DiPasquale, the statue depicts Neptune, the Roman god of the sea (known as Poseidon in Greek mythology), in a powerful and majestic pose. The figure stands an imposing 34 feet tall (12 feet for the base and 22 feet for Neptune himself), making it one of the largest bronze sculptures in the United States. The entire installation, including the base and surrounding sea creatures, weighs approximately 12.5 tons. Neptune is portrayed as a muscular, bearded figure wearing a crown and holding his iconic trident in his right hand. His left arm is outstretched in a welcoming gesture, symbolizing Virginia Beach's hospitality. The god's powerful stance and intense gaze out to sea create a sense of both strength and benevolence. At the base of the statue, a collection of marine life adds depth and context to the sculpture. These include a sea turtle, dolphins, fish, and other sea creatures, all intricately detailed and integrated into the overall design. This base not only provides stability for the massive statue but also represents the diverse marine ecosystem of the Atlantic Coast. The statue's green patina, characteristic of weathered bronze, has developed over time, giving the sculpture an aged and mythical appearance that complements its coastal setting. This coloration changes subtly with different lighting conditions, sometimes appearing more blue-green, other times more of a verdigris hue. Beyond its artistic merits, the Neptune statue serves several important functions for Virginia Beach: Landmark and Meeting Point: It has become a popular rendezvous spot f
