The walls of this town Are full of renown, And strangers delight to walk round 'em, But as for the dwellers, Both buyers and sellers, For me, you may hang 'em or drown 'em" Jonathan Swift. Chester, a medieval Roman Garrison town. Archaeologically and architecturally the richest city in Britain. It was originally the fortress site of the 20th legion (Valeria Victrix) who suppressed the uprising of the army led by the warier queen, Boadicea. Known in c. AD70 as Deva, it soon became a major trading port. one of the greatest strategic outposts of the Roman Empire. The walls extend in a two mile circuit and views of the canal, racecourse and the Roman Amphitheatre, to name but a few can be enjoyed by today's tourists.
