A view of the abandoned Elk Creek Quarry northeast of Trail, Oregon. In the early 1980s a plan by Congress had been developed to create the nearby Elk Creek Dam, a reservoir similar in scale to nearby Lost Creek Lake to control flooding of the Rogue River (along w/ the construction of Applegate Lake). The dam itself was made of rock excavated here & had gotten to a height of 80 feet before construction was stopped due to lawsuits regarding protecting endangered salmon. Since then the project had been abandoned, Elk Creek today now runs free down its original course. Here the abandoned pit has since filled up w/ rainwater creating a quarry lake.
