View NNW of Y Drenewydd (new town) aka the Anglesey Barracks, Dinorwic slate quarries, Llanberis, Wales, UK, where quarrymen from Anglesey lodged during the five-and-a-half-day working week. Two rows of 11 terraced, single-storey cottages face on to a central street. Each dwelling had two rooms - a living room with fireplace & a bedroom - shared by four men, often a family unit of father, son(s) & uncle(s). Although the Dinorwic Quarry continued in use into the 1960s, the Barracks were condemned in 1948 by a local Public Health Inspector as unfit for human habitation. There were two latrine blocks at the rear of each row, the cottages had windows only on the street side & there was no electricity or running water. The barracks are included in the Vivian Quarry Trails but are just outside the E boundary of Padarn Country Park. The Dinorwig Slate Quarry Mountain Landscape is part of The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales which became the UK's 32nd UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 July 2021.
