The MLK Memorial, officially known as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, is situated in West Potomac Park adjacent to the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. This national monument is dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most prominent figures in the American civil rights movement. The memorial was conceived not only as a tribute to his leadership during a transformative period in American history but also as a symbol of the values he championed: justice, democracy, hope, and love. Sculpted by artist Lei Yixin, the central piece of the memorial is a 30-foot high granite statue titled "Stone of Hope." It emerges from a larger piece named "Mountain of Despair, " inspired by a line from King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech: "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope." The memorial grounds also feature inscriptions from many of Dr. King's speeches, sermons, and writings, immortalizing his profound impact on the nation. Opened to the public in 2011, the site was strategically chosen to create a line of leadership from the Lincoln Memorial, where Dr. King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech, to the Jefferson Memorial, representing the ideals of freedom and democracy. By positioning the MLK Memorial among such significant American landmarks, the site underscores Dr. King's indispensable role in steering the nation toward the realization of its foundational ideals, especially in the areas of racial equality and civil rights.
