Altre informazioni:
The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, located in Washington DC's West Potomac Park, is a significant landmark dedicated to the 32nd President of the United States. Spread over 7.5 acres, the expansive monument serves as a testament to FDR's enduring influence on American history. The memorial was officially dedicated on May 2, 1997, by President Bill Clinton. The site's architecture and design were a result of collaboration between landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and sculptors including Leonard Baskin, Neil Estern, Robert Graham, Thomas Hardy, and George Segal. The memorial is divided into four outdoor "rooms, " each representing one of FDR's four terms in office from 1933 to 1945. The rooms house statues, walls, and water features, along with inscriptions of quotes from Roosevelt's speeches and fireside chats. One of the notable sculptures within the memorial is that of Roosevelt seated in a wheelchair, a tribute to his battle with polio. This statue was added in January 2001, four years after the initial dedication, following a controversy regarding the representation of FDR's disability. The memorial also includes sculptures representing the Great Depression, such as bread lines and rural poverty, and pays tribute to FDR's role in guiding the nation through the crisis and World War II. The site is managed by the National Park Service and is part of the National Mall and Memorial Parks group. It remains an essential site of remembrance and reflection on the life and legacy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
