(Photo taken on 3/29/2008) (DATELINE: Fort Lonesome) CAPTION: With a gentle hand and the skill of a surgeon dragline operator Jeff Hillshiem (cq, from subject) pulls a bucket across the mine floor scooping up phosphate rock. Each scoop of the bucket can weigh as much as 95 tons. However, before Hillshiem can get to the the phosphate, he must remove the surface dirt called "overburden" and place out of the way. Hillshiem was working a dragline in Mosaic's Four Corners Mine. SKIP O'ROURKE | Times STORY SUMMARY: Mosaic Fertilizer wants to add about 50, 000 acres to be mined in the future. Right now, they can't even consider mining these 7 parcels (scattered around their 25 sq. mile operation in SE Hillsborough County) because it's not in their "Development of Regional Impact" plan. They've been trying to get these acres added for about 2 years, and it finally looks like it's going to pass at a March 11 Board of County Commissioners meeting. Once it passes that, they will bring up applications for mining operation permits, which will then allow them to mine the land that they added. Neighbors, of course, hate the whole operation (dust, noise, water quality complaints are common), but county officials sluff off those concerns, saying that the 50, 000 acres isn't that much in the sceme of things and that there are already DEP regulations
