The bucket can pull up 95 tons of phosphate rock in one scoop. The rock is a key ingredient in the making of fertilizer. The dragline runs 24 hours a day. SKIP O'ROURKE | Times STORY SUMMARY: Mosaic Fertilizer wants to add about 50, 000 acres to be mined in the future. Right now, they can't even consider mining these 7 parcels (scattered around their 25 sq. mile operation in SE Hillsborough County) because it's not in their "Development of Regional Impact" plan. They've been trying to get these acres added for about 2 years, and it finally looks like it's going to pass at a March 11 Board of County Commissioners meeting. Once it passes that, they will bring up applications for mining operation permits, which will then allow them to mine the land that they added. Neighbors, of course, hate the whole operation (dust, noise, water quality complaints are common), but county officials sluff off those concerns, saying that the 50, 000 acres isn't that much in the sceme of things and that there are already DEP regulations
